You really have to wonder if it's all "for the good of the poor" or just some diabolical effort to promote their population ideals. (Bill Gates does explain his concerns with overpopulation are served by his global vax efforts. That better health + vaccines = fewer children born, since you don't "need" to have 10 children to get 2 to adulthood. I find this somewhat faulty, because if the diseases are so bad that many don't live to adulthood, why bother attempting to change that via vaccination or anything else?)
Just a thought: WHO the heck do they think they are? Do they really think they should try to control the population of the ENTIRE world?!? Just because they're billionaires, suddenly the rest of us should listen to them (and be subject to their preferences, at gunpoint?) in regards to subjects like this...? If they'd like to lecture about business-building, or some other relevant issue (in regards to their success) I'm all ears. But about medicine? Reproduction? I daresay it's none of their business.

Remedied!
One of the things that sets me apart from a lot of people in my family is my tendency to favor natural (even weird) remedies before pursuing allopathic medicine. Sometimes, of course, there's not much choice.
The other day I tiptoed upstairs with my sleeping 14-month-old on my shoulder to lay her in her crib for a nap. I have allowed horrific habits to develop, and am at their mercy until I get up the energy to wean her from needing to "nurse to sleep." In any case, the drop went bad and she awoke with much travail. I settled down to nurse her again, hoping (ha ha ha) the girls would sit tight and work on their schoolwork for a few more minutes. They did not, of course, and shortly Little Artist came up to express concern over her big sister having "something like a nail poked into her knee." Baby was sleeping at this point, so I put her in her crib (successfully) and hurried downstairs, mulling over the unlikelihood that Li'l Artist would confuse "sliver" with "nail" and that this probably wasn't a broken nail, and I hope it doesn't require surgery since health insurance isn't one of my current tools.
Big Sister was crouched low, the holey-knees of her jeans exposing her kneecaps and then some. In one of her knees was... something. "Something like a nail," in fact. I say "something," because while the business end of it (the part poking through her skin and skidding around on the surface of her patella) was very nail-like. The rest of it wasn't, much. It looked like something that might've been attached to the bottom of a table leg. Circular, metal, and protruding from the back side of it were two 'nail-like' appendages, maybe an inch long or more. One of these was decidedly through the skin. I tried gently to pull it out, but it wasn't cooperating, and Big Sister howled a lot at the attempt. I assumed the inserted spike was like the other one (not barbed or anything), but it wasn't acting like it, and I didn't want to cause more trouble by helping. I called my husband at work, and he advised taking her to the local doc that saw Gi-gi last year, and that chided my husband for his lack of "eyebrows." I had the same thought, so I helped her to the van, and plucked the soundly-sleeping (doggone it) Baby from her crib, and loaded the rest up as well. It's only about 2 miles away, so we got there and I walked Big Sister in (yes, she could walk), showed the receptionist, and was called back to the doctor by the time I'd finished filling out the medical history paperwork.
He injected some novocaine (or something), the sight of which, since she wouldn't lay down and doc wouldn't wait, caused her much anguish. By the time I took her face in my hands to assure her the sting would be short-lived, doc had the wicked thing out with a pair of tweezers.
What followed was discussion about tetanus, punctuated with phrases like, "promise you this thing is covered in tetanus" and "guaranteed death sentence" and other gentle, compassionate utterances. I told doc I didn't think she'd had the shot before (later, in reading, I changed my mind, as she did have the 'routine' shots for a few years early in life. I didn't realize tetanus was part of that.), and asked what else was in it. "What else? Nothing else! It's tetanus!" "Well, what is it preserved with?" I don't know that I got an answer, having to check on and/or retrieve the other girls at this point. I asked if there was a 'safe window,' that is, could I look into things, and if I decide to give her the vaccine, would I be able to come the next day.. He said he wasn't terribly sure, tetanus being so rare in America anymore, but he figured that it was likely I'd have a day or two.** I thanked him, and the receptionist said she'd bill us, and we were on our way home.
I'd like to say I knew what to do from that point, but I didn't. I called some friends who are better versed than I in dealing with such things, and they recommended soaking her knee in hydrogen peroxide, really working it in to the spot, bandaging with antibiotic ointment. Doc had already recommended epsom salts, so I thought I'd start with the peroxide.
We did the peroxide, we did the epsom salts, we did the ointment and bandaid and I googled tetanus info. Which wasn't very calming. But I discovered that it's the T in DTAP, and I was fairly certain that sounded familiar from back in the day when I didn't ask so many doggone questions. While getting a new vaccine is a huge, difficult decision with what I know (or rather, what no one seems to know) about vaccines, there's not a lot I can do about one that's already done, and at least I felt I could inform the doc of that. This was a Thursday.
Friday morning came, and with it a puffy, red, painful area around the entry wound. After watching Gi-gi's rapid infection (from a wound far less serious) last year, I didn't want to mess around with this, either. We were still doing epsom salts, and I had her scratch at the spot to try to let in more peroxide (I really wished I could just inject some, not that it's recommended!). I remembered my midwife recommending chewed plantain for Gi-gi's wound (which didn't work, or at least not enough), and I knew I had comfrey growing everywhere I didn't want it. I googled a little more, discovering that comfrey is a great healing agent, but you want to apply it to a clean wound, and not knit the skin together over something infected. Oops. That wasn't going to work. I found some plantain in the grass, and, in lieu of having her chew it (the girl was already balking at the soaking schedule, etc), I tried putting some leaves in the blender with some of her spit. :) I wrapped it on her knee with plastic wrap, simultaneously calling the doctor to see if he recommended antibiotics. He sure did, and told me to go to a pharmacy and have them call him. [My plan was to fill the prescription, but give the herb a chance to work. I didn't want to be caught on a weekend with a serious infection, but wasn't going to give any antibiotics to her just then either.] As it happened, the pharmacy didn't have the right size/dosage of pill, but they were open briefly Saturday morning and they'd have it by then. I told them that was perfect, since I planned to treat her with spit and weeds from the lawn (okay, I wasn't quite that brave) for a day or two anyway.
It didn't change for the better by afternoon, and further research said to let the poultice dry, that the drawing-out would be enhanced. Oops on the plastic wrap. I ditched the blender too, chopping finely on the cutting board and mixing with spit in a bowl (I suppose there might be reason to have her chew and absorb some of the elements that way, but the enzymes would work on the plantain however the spit was introduced. :) When she had to be up and around, I used a bandaid to hold the leaves in place, and also as she slept.
By morning I was quite surprised to see NO sign of infection. It didn't hurt. No redness or swelling. Hubby's second opinion concurred, and not only did I save the cost of the antibiotics, but I got to call and cancel the prescription and say that my organic, backwoods, voodoo-medicine worked! In turn, he assured me he'd hold the prescription on the shelf for me "in case" I needed it early in the week. :)
We didn't need it, and the knee is healing nicely. I DID take a picture on my cellphone, but I don't know how to get it from there to here. You really didn't want to see it anyway.

Moral Eating
I've been posting about Joel Salatin's book, Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal.
I also wrote about watching Food, Inc, and was troubled by the idea that organic production models couldn't reasonably feed the world, that they just don't produce enough.
I was surprised to be struck by something in the Animal Welfare chapter at the end of Joel's book. He actually is quoting another author, but it really has me thinking...
He begins by discussing the animal-welfare people who are very against inducing abortion in third-trimester cows for the sole reason of putting more weight on the beast (in a feedlot, where her future is to be meat, not milk). This is obviously poor animal husbandry! But,
Ouch.
Really ouch.
I've pondered this. Why did God make animals? Why did he make them each different? Was it for His pleasure, as well as our benefit? If so, if He delights in having "cattle on (a thousand) hills" and not on cement, lounging on mountains of excrement, wracked with bacteria, disease, and pain, while their very life is drawn out of them on a daily basis... If this is how we can "afford" to drink milk... Does this please Him? If He gave a chicken feathers, a beak and the instinct to peck, feet and the nature to scratch in dirt.. Is He pleased if they spend their entire lives with 8 others in a 16"x16" cage, having their beak tips cut off, never seeing the light of day or breathing anything but the dust and mites and manure from thousands of others under the same roof? Is this God's preferred way of providing "affordable" eggs and meat for His children? Does He want us to consider this?? Are we responsible to consider where and how our dinner got to our plate?
This doesn't seem small to me. It doesn't seem inconsequential at all. Joel (or Matthew Scully) is right. I've read more than one blog - operated by well-meaning stay-at-home Mamas, determined to steward God's resources responsibly, to feed their families well - who find great virtue in frugality... and haven't even looked at this perspective. Many pursue "organic" food when possible, but even when they don't or can't, the extent of their thought seems to be, "I just pray that God will protect us from any risk..." In light of this, that seems awfully self-focused. When we buy that tray of 'affordable' meat, are we righteous because we didn't 'waste' money, or are we unrighteous for propping up a system that abuses people (illegal immigrants, among others), poisons water and fish and great swaths of soil, and, to use a word from the quotation, "disrespects" the very nature of the thing which we eat? Cows don't naturally eat grain, legumes, or chicken manure (you read that right. As of 2007 anyway, that was/is an approved practice near Joel's home). Should this factor in to our purchasing decisions, along with pricetag and nutrition?
The other issue, the question of whether or not people would starve to death if we didn't chem-farm and feed-lot. Joel briefly refers to this in his book.

It's as inconsistent as the pro-lifers eating disrespected factory farmed meat out of Costco. "They really believe, like our Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Mason Carbaugh in the 1980s wrote in his annual bulletin, 'If we went to organic farming, we would just have to decide which half of the world would starve.' These officials actually believe this. They make statements like this and go to church and feel exceptionally good inside about protecting the world from lunatics like me.
How did he come up with such a silly notion? Simply. The land grand college researches organic production this way:
Pick several plots of ground.
These plots have been used previously in research regarding herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers. The soil is dead.
Identify three as the organic plots and three as conventional plots.
Organic plots receive no soil amendments; conventional receive full complement of fertilizer, pre-emerge weed killer, grubicides, etc.
Plant hybrid corn - genetically selected to require chemical fertilizer - nutrient vacuum cleaners.
Leave the plots to their own devices. Organic plots get weedy. So what. Herbicide kills weeds in conventional.
Harvest corn.
Measure yield. Organic pitiful; conventional excellent.
Extrapolate production volume over worldwide corn acreage.
Conclusion: Organics will kill half the world's population.
Folks, I'm not making this up. This is exactly how the research is conducted. Now can you see why science is not objective? Anyone with a lick of sense understands that chemicalized soils take at least three years to detoxify. The native soil flora and fauna take a long time to recolonize dead soil. Notice, too, that they didn't plant hardy open pollinated corn. And nobody cared about the nutritional quality of the corn; the only thing that mattered was volume This is Modern Science 101, the foundation of official press releases and government-sponsored research.
If organics would kill the world half-over, then why are the 'big guys' so determined to keep neighborhood farms and farmers from feeding the people nearest them? Have you seen what Joel Salatin produces? Have you seen articles about what people are growing on their city lot, or their quarter acre? Have you researched the biointensive method? It's incredible. And all organic. Too, if conventional means raping and pillaging the soil and the animals, I have a hard time believing God would love the increase of people as much as He seems to. God would not tell anyone to "fill the earth" if we had to abuse the rest of His creation to do so... would He?
I can hear people saying, "whoa now... hold on. I have several children to feed and clothe on my husband's salary. How exactly am I supposed to afford stuff like that? And my moral compass may be calibrated incorrectly?!?" I hear the same thing in my own mind. A recent YouTube video I watched featured Daniel Salatin (Joel's son) teaching others how to cut and package chicken pieces... The whole chicken was $3/lb, and boneless, skinless breasts were $13/lb! I don't know how current it was, but even Azure has similar prices for such. And I about choked. That may be doable for a couple, or small family, but that starts getting crazy as you go up in family size. What about the price for beef? Grains? Veggies?
I don't have any easy answers, but 2 things come to mind. First, conventional food isn't really cheap. You hear about "the Farm Bill" every year? That spells out what the government is going to do with, to, for, about food production. Whether they will pay Joe Smith to NOT grow wheat, etc. You hear a farmer mention that bean prices were the same for his grandpa... How can that be? Grandpa probably had a cheaper tractor, smaller mortgage, cheaper inputs.. How then is today's farmer even paying the property taxes? Government "subsidies?" [There is a lot about this that I don't know. I would love to know more about how this works, if anyone can help!] Americans spend a smaller proportion of their income for food than ever before. America "sells" corn or whatever to Mexico and Haiti... and the imported American stuff is EVEN CHEAPER than a local subsistence farmer can grow it for. How else does this happen, without taxpayers propping up the industry? So we're paying for it, just not when we write a check to the grocer.
Another cost of today's food is in medical expenses. Obesity is such a huge problem, we have skyrocketing rates of diabetes, heart disease (in younger and younger people), cancer, chronic diseases. MUCH of this is the result of the daily choices people make, when it comes time to eat. And we're lazy, and ignorant. Even food bank recipients (often) refuse dry beans, or other higher nutrition, more effort, foodstuffs. Most people don't see the purpose in taking time to make beans, or soup, or anything, when you can get (seemingly!) "the same thing" from a can or box or package in 1/8 of the time, with 1/12 the effort. And in short order, they're spending how much per month on prescription medications to deal with the problems they've developed. How 'affordable' was that food again?
I don't have any ways for you to opt out of the first hidden costs. Tax evasion is not looked at lightly. :) The second you have much more power over. Not complete power mind you; things happen, certainly, but we know enough to know that some things are "bad for you" and others notsomuch. Use that knowledge, and better your odds in that department. Don't know? Well, if you're reading this, you have access to a world of information. Get some. :)
Small organic producers don't get the corporate welfare (big organic might, I don't know). They're not picking your pocket; anything they get from you is entirely voluntary, entirely transparent. We have to respect that at least. :) As such, their prices are higher than that of their conventional counterparts. A farmer, or market gardener, needs to be compensated with a living wage. We shouldn't decry that. If we do, what is their incentive to continue?
But what can we do... Is there an option outside of doubling our grocery budget?
I think so. We eat *darn good* and have extra food stocked in the pantry and freezers, yet we *still* fall within the lowest average spending for a household our size. How do we do it? Well, first, we don't eat out. Hardly ever. The way I hear things from Dave Ramsey, that's a huge expense for some families. I know people who, both working and both tired, eat dinner out a couple times a week or more. Some lunches are in restaurants too. Cutting back on this could easily free up a LOT of grocery money. Second, we buy bulk when possible, and from buying clubs/co-ops. This is a GREAT way to get healthy, organic foods at decent prices. I find the best buys are (of course) on the least-processed foods. If you're going to buy organic canned soups, they're expensive anywhere you find them. Azure Standard is one I've mentioned more than once. Almost anyone can raise a few laying hens, or if not, give up a $3 latte and buy a dozen or two eggs from someone local. Grass-fed, organic beef is horrifically expensive. At least, in my mind. :) But buying a whole beef (or a half, or a quarter, or finding a dozen family members to split it) is much more economical. Where do you find such a thing? Well, the last one we bought I discovered through a local organic grocery store. They were stocking $5/lb hamburger from a neighbor who farms organically, but I wondered if they knew of anyone else in the area that raised beef completely on pasture. They gave me a name, and I called, and the rest is history. That was 2 years ago, and we're about due for a refill. :) Sometimes these stores have bulletin boards; keep an eye out there, or put up your own name and number, "in search of" grass-fed beef. You could do the same thing at a feed store. Probably the best place to find information right now is a farmer's market. Ask any vendor there if they know of someone, even ask other patrons. You can tap into a great network this way. You might find someone raising chickens, rabbits, turkeys... A lot of people in this area would consider bartering, and I bet that's true elsewhere. You never know until you ask. Personally, having someone I could call to tend these chickens when I'm gone would be worth a bird or two! Now, who wants to share a milk cow?
This is a long post. I thought about dividing it up, but I didn't like it that way. One point leads to the other. And I want to encourage you, if you were struck like I was by that first quote, that it is not a catch-22. We trust God "to provide" right? Is He not capable of providing in line with His own design? Let us trust Him to provide well. If He calls us this direction He is faithful to equip.

Food, Inc.
Have you seen it? It's a documentary on food production, and it's viewable free online through April 29 at pbs. If you have a Netflix subscription you can watch it online there too.
I've heard it talked about and a friend advertised it's PBS broadcast on Facebook last week, and then a cousin mentioned he caught it and was wondering if I'd seen it. I hadn't, but I arranged to.
It is a good intro to factory-food and it touches on many sides of the Eating Dilemma.
What I like:
Aside from a few clips that we've all seen (the downer-cow being prodded with a forklift to "qualify" to become part of our food supply), there was nothing crazily-over-the-top about the treatment of the animals or their environment. Some might call that a criticism, but I think the regular run-of-the-mill nastiness is enough to make the point without distracting.
Joel Salatin is in it, and his methods/writing were the first reasonable exposure I had to the differences in organic vs. conventional food production. I love his attitude towards his farm, his business, his animals, the industry, people... It doesn't hurt that he's a Christian, and, I think, homeschooled his (now grown) children. He makes a great point that cheap isn't necessarily good. "Who wants to buy the cheapest car?" In fact, "cheap" often means "very expensive" when you factor in the environmental costs, the medical/healthcare costs of an abused body, societal costs, and more. Many (most?) of the big crops are SUBSIDIZED. Because we're paying for those via our taxes, the price tag at the grocery store can be smaller. That doesn't make his $3/dozen eggs necessarily expensive (except that we still have to pay the IRS, even if we buy his produce).
As I said above, it touches on many facets of industrial food production, including the marketing/labeling, labor/illegal immigration, genetic modification, animal treatment, environment, nutrition, law/politics, farmer-supplier relationships, and more.
What I didn't like:
The politics. One guy (the founder of Stoneyfield Farm yogurt, I think) actually says (in a "too bad" sort of way), "We're not going to get rid of capitalism. Certainly we're not going to get rid of it in the time that we need to arrest global warming and reverse the toxification of our air, our food, and our water.... And if we attempt to make the perfect the enemy of the good and to say, 'we're only gonna buy food from the most perfect system within a hundred miles of us' we're never gonna get there." He adds that "business" is the source of all the pollution, all the things that are "destroying this world."
While I'm sure he regrets using the global warming excuse now, I couldn't believe that he was so "anti" capitalist, considering the comment right before that, was, "organic had been growing over 20% annually. It's one of the fastest-growing segments of the food industry." Oh, and right after the anti-capitalism? "Today, in 2008, we're not only the #3 yogurt brand in America, but we're among the most profitable." Huh? I thought he was against capitalism? Or does he just blame it for all the environmental evils, and decided to play the game for the environment's sake. So much for moral absolutes.
In one scene, on a nice, lush farm, a van pulls in and two super-smiling young men emerge, among others, and the lady of the farm asks, "help me figure out.. who are? and ...where? are you from?" and they, still smiling too much, say, "We work for Wal-Mart." She, "Oh.. okay.. Do you know that we don't go to Wal-Mart? That we've never been? Amazing, isn't it?" They continue to smile, and the older man says, "and so we come to you." She might've left it there, considering that it seems they are potential patrons of her farm products, but she says, "we just sort of started boycotting it years ago, and just kept riding in that boat..."
I don't like the "big = evil" assumption, although clearly some of the big ones (Monsanto, for one) could hardly be described otherwise. I don't like the implication that desiring profit means that you have no morals whatsoever. Of course businesses have to look at the bottom line. What is with these types, do they think all our hard work should never amount to anything? I don't see them begrudging Joel Salatin his $3/dozen.
They also follow one family in the grocery store, as they weigh pears and consider the price of broccoli, and are "forced" to consider the boxed, processed stuff as more affordable. With some exceptions, you can eat very well, yet very frugally without succumbing to that idea. Beans, rice, flour, butter, pasta, veggies and fruits in season... Meat in small amounts, this is doable for most, if they take the time and learn to cook it. A top of broccoli might not be much by way of a main dish, but cut up and added to a meal for flavor and nutrition, even in small amounts, is certainly a better choice than creamed corn. Especially when you consider the price of the diabetes medication you'll need in a few years.
I am undecided yet on some issues. The documentary portrays the stark difference between the "old" ways and the "new," contrasting the bushels per acre, the size of chickens and the speed of their growth, etc. I'm not sure where they're going with this. If my brother criticizes me for anything, it's that I'm always "against technology" in some fashion or another. But seriously? What should be done instead? Should we go back to 10% of yield? The benefits seem outweighed by the cost. The cost being that a LOT of people won't be eating from that field. And will they be eating at all? Consider how many hours per day people once spent just to feed themselves and their families. I'm willing to hear the debate about whether or not that is reasonable, but I'm not ready off the bat to advocate it.

Paranoid.

I just want to reiterate here (because here is the only place I can imagine having done something recently enough to have offended anyone) that I am not against anyone having their child routinely vaccinated, or getting the flu or swine flu shots for themselves or their children. I am against MY children having the flu or swine flu shot, and remain decidedly undecided about the rest of the program. And uphold the freedom we still enjoy (even if it is hanging by a thread) to CHOOSE one way or another.
So - in case the offended/hurt person/people were offended/hurt by my Swine Flu Questions post, I wish to assure them that it most certainly has nothing to do with their decisions on such (I don't even know if they have made decisions on such). It has far more to do with my suspicion of all things bureaucratic and my relatively weak blogging of late. :)

Swine Flu Questions
Well, it's everywhere. The news, the radio, the internet, and God help you (me) if you question the government mandates for vaccination among Facebook friends. :)
Why am I not lining up to get this? Well, as is common with vaccination information, there are just too many unanswered questions...
Why the rabid hype when the southern hemisphere is coming out of their flu season and it wasn't such a big deal for them?
Why has the government issued guidelines to classify any reaction/death to this vaccine as a "coincidence?"
Why did Congress act to shield these vaccine manufacturers from any possible lawsuits?
Why are they pushing this for pregnant women when there have been no studies on them - let alone time to do any?
Why did they change laws to allow for major prosecution against anyone advocating natural preventatives or solutions?
How can they say "this vaccine is quite like the flu shot" (and therefore safe), but follow that with "this virus is so different and we're all gonna die!" (not a direct quote :))?
What I know:
People born before 1950 or so seem to have natural immunity.
Millions of people have had it and survived it - this year.
The virus isn't mutating like they thought it might.
Therefore:
I'm not going to sign up for a largely-untested mass vaccination program promoted by people who are opposed to open and honest discussion (let alone the radicals in the white house who've advocated forced sterilization via drinking water additives).
I WILL try to get more sunlight/vitamin D. I WILL eat more virgin coconut oil. I will try to reduce and limit sugar intake, stock up on vitamin C and echinacea, maybe other herbs.
Am I telling you to stay away from needles? Nope. I'm telling you to inform yourself before you make major choices for yourself and your family. If you can read the same information and come away confident and secure in getting the H1N1 shot, by all means, you've done right. But INFORM YOURSELF - don't just listen to one side.

The bold might actually be added in by Rick Joyner. This list is from an article he wrote and someone sent me via an email link. The article is religious/prophetic in nature, but even if that's not your bent, don't overlook this very real threat!
I'm trying to keep my head from exploding. Really. Is this our America? Is this the "change" Obama promised? Part of it certainly. A diabolical part.
Three things:
PRAY. This is it. Will this generation of American Christians face judgment having not "done all to stand" against this? In the email I got, my friend wrote,
"...let us begin to earnestly pray for God to intervene in America. I believe that the intervention of God primary includes the awakening of the church to the wisdom of God, to its divine mandate, the emboldening of the church to lift its voice not in fear or in political reaction but with the Spirit of the Lord empowering it to speak and declare the truth in righteousness.
The Kingdom of God never ceases to advance. Even when the enemy seems to be gaining the upper hand, His tactics will always backfire on him. I believe that the church is about to awaken in America. Let us earnestly pray together for the Lord to lift a standard of righteousness against the flood of darkness."
I couldn't agree more.
CALL YOUR CONGRESSMEN. Don't know who they are? Check here. Call the capitol switchboard (202-224-3121), ask for their office, and give them your opinion. If they get nasty, or try to argue with you, don't let up. If they hang up, call again. Email. Fax.
TELL OTHERS. Your friends. Your email list. Your facebook and twitter folks. Your pastors and neighbors and everyone else.
